TOPIC: sync iPhone and PC via adhoc network

sync iPhone and PC via adhoc network 14 years 11 months ago #2585

Hi There,

in the wiki section there is a description how to set up an ad hoc network to sync iPhone and mac.

www.trgtd.com.au/wiki/doku.php?id=iphone:adhoc

How do I sync iPhone and (Windows XP) PC, when there is no wifi network, that I can connect both devices to?
Can't I setup an ad hoc network with the PC similar to the one described for the mac?

If yes: How do I do this exactly?
(A similar wiki article for PC would be great)

If no: why not?

Thanks a lot,
Harald

Hey,

Sorry this response has taken so long.

The good news is, it can be done.

This site has most of the details.
www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networ...owman_02april08.mspx

but here's the summary.
Open control panel, network connections
Open "wireless network connection"
Click on "change advanced settings"
Click on the wireless networks tab
Click on the advanced button
Click on either "adhoc networks only" or "any available network"
Close that window
Click Add on the preferred networks
Enter a network name
(Select WPA encryption if you have it, otherwise WEP)
Click ok.

You now have the pc set up to host a network that you can join.
You have to join the network by double clicking on the wireless icon in your system tray. It will as you for a password. Make something up.

Then on the iphone....
Go to the general settings in the control panel
Click on wi-fi
Turn on wifi, your network should be listed.
Click to join that network and enter the password as above.

You should now have both devices on an adhoc network. It should be possible to confirm by checking the IP address in the iphone against what comes up on the tr sync dialog. The first couple of numbers should be the same (mine got 169.254.*.*)

then sync as normal. If you still can't check the troubleshooting guide on our wiki. You might have to open a port through the windows firewall.

It sounds complicated, but it really isn't too hard. I'll try to get a page with screenshots done soon.
Cheers
S8.
