TOPIC: Task / Action in progress

Task / Action in progress 15 years 2 months ago #1955

Is there a way to mark an action / task as "in progress" or "working on"?
I think this would be handy for things that take a while (so "ASAP" seems a little too forceful).

For example, I'm working my way towards 100 push ups, starting with 1. It'll be a while before I get there so I'd like this marked as "working on" or "active" or "in progress" or something.

I'm a new users so I don't know if I'm missing any features?

(I do know I'm the odd one out when it comes to how I organized Context and Topics, but so far it's really working very great!! I'll see if I can convert my dad too, but I'll need to convince him this will SAVE time..)

Sounds like "100 pushups" is a project and you need a repeating daily action to do your pushups...

I don't know how long it will last and I do not want daily 'ASAP' reminders for this.

And this was just an example :)
I would like the same "in progress" status option for other projects/actions.

For example - an online video course that I'll only watch when I feel like it/ have a lot of spare time. Or a project for which - like the 100 push ups - I do not know the end date, but only know it's going to take a while. Another example would be working on a large oil painting where I have to wait for the layers to dry before I can continue.

I don't need all of those things to clutter my ASAP action list, I do not want daily reminders for those things either (that would be either annoying - for the pushups, I don't have reminders to eat my breakfast either..- or useless - can't do a thing until the paint is dry), but I would like an "in progress" status / state so I can filter it 'in' and see all the "when I feel like it" and "longterm" projects that I am currently working on.

And while I'm at it - a % complete would be really nice too!

If you don't want to track physical actions relating to this, then maybe this is just a "goal"...

Thank you for the suggestion, but I *do* want to track them - I want to know what is 'active'.

The pushups is just an example. Could be a goal except my goals as I've set them up are a little 'more important' than this. I don't really care if I make it to 100, I just want to try.

So I'd still really really like an "active"state for long-term projects that will last for an unknown long(ish) amount of time.

Come to think of it, if there is an "inactive" why isn't there an 'active' already (with a progress percentage indication - could be drop down or progress bar or something ?)

(If Java is like CSS/PHP it should be a matter of just adding one line of code so "active" is an option in the the drop down list for "Status" ??)

Just out of curiosity - you would add something like working on a large painting to your ASAP list so you can see it every single day for at least 6 months, even when you can not work on it?
It's not inactive, it's not delegated, and it's not scheduled to start because it has already started..

Especially when I'm working on more than 1 painting I kinda need the overview 'active' list, I can't always remember for how long a painting has been drying.. or sometimes can't remember where I stored it until I can start again (lack of storage space makes you creative, so I have to climb on chairs etc to hunt the thing down..:))

For the online courses example - it's not uncommon for me to follow/ watch multiple online courses at random, it would be nice to keep track of those so I can quickly see where I'm at for each course, and which once I've started on. But this is purely 'hobby' and 'fun to know', definitely not a goal or a project that has to be finished, nor an action that has to be done ASAP or something that I want to schedule.

So an overview of all "active" would be great.

That way I could see with 1 mouse click what is 'active', instead of having to scroll through a list of ASAP actions/goals where those items shouldn't really be in the first place.
I've got things set up so I can filter on Topic ("sports" or "learn" ) if I wanted to get more specific in the "active status" list.

I can see that having a user-definable status list would be nice, but I can also see that there would be implications that would need to be taken into account within the software.

For actions that take more than one hit to accomplish, I just leave these as "Do ASAP" - it's still and outstanding action. I tend to use the notes to "bookmark" my progress so I know where to pick things up again. That said, I do make a concious effort to only start actions that I can complete in the time I have available.

For things like on-line courses I use a read/review context for things I really want to read and the someday/maybe list when I've got something that I might do want to read if the opportunity arises.

For hobbies, I dont' tend to track these. I do try and plan some discretionary time in my calendar to allocate to whatever personal hobbies/interests that currently have my attention. Specific actions/projects/goals etc relating to these interests may be tracked. I guess the key is really finding something that works for you.
