I think notes should stay plain-text, but it would be nice if a few things could be rendered in a prettier fashion when the note is in view mode.

One (ha) easy way of accomplishing this would be to utilise the Markdown syntax, which is fairly popular and easy to use (making something **bold** like so). I believe there is already a Java kit, "markdownj" if I recall correctly. It should take a text field and render it to simple XHTML. If there is an easy way to display simple HTML in a widget with Java, then that could be the solution.
