TOPIC: Dropbox sync not working

Dropbox sync not working 13 years 4 months ago #4318

I've been using GTD on Windows desktop for about six months now and iPhone using Dropbox Sync. Yesterday, it decided to stop sync'ing.

I still get messages that syncup.txt is deleted and syncup.txt is added and the Thoughts, Action Updates, Project Updates and Ref Item Updates bars complete, but none of the others. After 15-20 secs, I get the message "Failed - Cannot connect to remote".

After relinking my Dropbox folder without success, I updated the desktop version to v3.4 which didn't seem to make any difference.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Hello rtofeinberg,

Where do you get the message "Failed - Cannot connect to remote" ?
On the iPhone or the Desktop?

Best regards,
Benjamin

On the iPhone.

I am using v2.5 on my iPhone and this on my desktop:

Product Version: ThinkingRock 3.4.1 201006101454
Java: 1.6.0_31; Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM 20.6-b01
System: Windows 7 version 6.1 running on x86; Cp1252; en_US (trgtd)
Userdir: C:\Users\rtofeinb\AppData\Roaming\.thinkingrock\tr-3.4

I was using v3.3 on Windows 7 when it started failing so I thought I'd try upgrading to no avail.

Thanks.

I had a problem very similar to this with the same error message. The issue was being caused by my Dropbox settings in TR. Turns out that I was pointing to the wrong directory in Dropbox. I resolved the issue by correcting the information in TR. If you have not done so already, please go to Tools > Options > Miscellaneous > iPhone Sync

Ensure the Dropbox option is selected and that the directory is pointing to the your local dropbox folder and no deeper. For example,
"C:\Documents and Settings(slash)Administrator(slash)My Documents(slash)My Dropbox"

I hope this resolves the issues!

The issue somehow resolved itself. I'll tell my tale in the hopes that others will benefit.

As I said, the system sync'd up fine for months until a few days ago. I hadn't changed any configuration parameters in GTD and my Dropbox folder hasn't changed. Of this I'm sure since that seems to be one of the more common issues. I checked and double-checked and triple-checked it.

Finally, on a lark, I changed the Dropbox folder to ...(slash)Dropbox(slash)ThinkingRock. This, of course, didn't work.

When I changed back to the root folder ...(slash)Dropbox it began to work again right away.

I'm guessing there's some unseen variable recorded in the configuration that finally reset itself when I changed the Dropbox folder setting to something else and then back.

Good luck!

Thank you for taking time to document the "resolution". I could not see what could have gone incorrect. As you said maybe installing the new version did not keep the setting properly. I will ask users to change and then reselect the Dropbox root folder next time I get a support email. I will update the FAQ too.
