Hi I have three questions.

1) If I edit the time values, are they stored in the .trx file?

2) If I enable time values, is this setting stored in the .trx files?

3) Once a task has a time value set there seems to be no way to remove it. Is this possible? Context and topic values can be set to "none" but time values apparently cannot. I have not checked if this is also the case with goals and energy.

All criteria behave the same way. Here is the answers to your questions:
1) If I edit the time values, are they stored in the .trx file? Yes

2) If I enable time values, is this setting stored in the .trx files? Yes

3) Once a task has a time value set there seems to be no way to remove it. Is this possible? Context and topic values can be set to "none" but time values apparently cannot. I have not checked if this is also the case with goals and energy.
You can add a new value 'None'. You cannot reset the criteria to null.

Thanks for the answers. What I'm trying to do is find a way to take a bunch of tasks from my various projects and single actions, and flag them as "this week". Then from that bunch, flag a few each day as "today".

This will allow me to focus on specific actions and drive to completion, something GTD by itself does not really cover. I have found this is the best way to achieve progress. You can read about this here

lifehacker.com/5938353/work-less-to-get-more-done

I am trying to find a reasonable way to use TR to flag these tasks.

The only way I can see to do it is to appropriate the Time function for this purpose, delete the existing values and add two new ones "This week" and "Today" and set them against the chosen tasks. This is why I want to be able to remove the values without needing to resort to a value of "None" which is different to a task with a null time value.

I appreciate the Time values are not really designed to be used this way. If you can think of a better way to flag tasks I'm open to suggestion. I cannot use Topics because they are heavily in use. I could use contexts in a pinch (eg I have Home and Work so set up Home this week and Home today and Work this week and Work today) but that feels counter intuitive.

Thanks,
Chris

I will go to the Review Actions screen on a tab where all the actions are listed. I will then select the actions I want to do this week (ctrl to select actions that are not consecutive, shift if they are), then I will use the postpone button (6th button from the left) and set the action date to a date This Week.

Then I will go to my This Week tab, select the ones I want to do today, and using the same postpone function set the action date to today. The actions will then appear on the Today tab.

Hi Claire, thanks, I like that approach as it retains the correct function of This Week and Today. If I set the weekly date to be the same day the following week this ensures they remain visible all week on the This Week tab, and individual actions can be set for Today.

Can you clarify what Postpone Action Date is actually doing? I use Due, Start and Followup dates occasionally. Does this always set Due dates?

Thanks
Chris

From the help, searching "postpone" (just to encourage users to use the help):

Postpone Action Date
This function increases the action date by the number of periods specified:
if action is Inactive, the start date is postponed;
if action is Do ASAP, the due date is postponed;
if action is Scheduled, the scheduled date is postponed;
if action is Delegated, the follow-up date is postponed.

If the action did not have an action date, the action date is calculated as the current date plus the postponement (period).
