TOPIC: Frustrations with Missing Funtionality

Frustrations with Missing Funtionality 14 years 3 weeks ago #3475

I'm getting frustrated with the lack of movement on improvements to thinking rock functionality.
I don't have an iPhone or an Android so I pretty much don't care about the progress in that space.

The missing functionality that I am most often frustrated by is:

Lack of drag and drop within the application (move a project from Projects to Future)
Lack of ability to make additional future files (Refrigerator, Freezer, Deep Freeze)
Lack of ability to have some kind of notification when a project moves from the Future tab to the Projects tab
(I only recently figured out how to make projects move on a particular date - there's 2 huge tricks)
Lack of ability to drag and drop a web page or an office document into the notes section
Lack of ability to associate files with a project
Lack of a guide to really integrate the goals functionality with my projects,
(I see the potential power there, but I'm not really getting the benefit yet because I haven't been able to figure out how to use the frameworks functionality in my own life on my own projects)

The functionality may be there, but I've not had the time to figure out how to make it work.

Because of this, I have started looking at other apps.

David Allen doesn't have a recommended app for the windows side of the computing world only Omni Focus for the mac.

I see that there is a company providing a product called Get It Done that looks promising (has anyone used it?)

I don't like that GID is web only. That takes it out of the running for me because I just need to be able to be web free some times and still get work done.

Bottom Line: Thinking Rock is still the best GTD implementation for windows, but only until someone else really starts competing in that space.

I just read your post. May I inquire what the future tab is, such as "moving project from Projects to Future"? Am I missing something? Where can I find this?

If you click on the projects button (green file folders) you will see the above image

Notice the blue Future tab, that is where you put projects that you don't want to be working on just yet.

If you close a project down to just the line (tree view not showing) you can hit CTRL-X to cut, and then click over on Future and hit CTRL-V to paste.

If you have the tree view showing, the paste functionality will not work and you will end up making a second copy of what ever project you had copied earlier.

As long as you have "Start" date enable on project view, any top level project (top level projects only) on the future tab will be moved to the projects tab on that date.

Did that answer your question?

Malcom,

I thank you for the explanation. I didn't know that such feature exists. I think I like that ;)

But I don't want to abuse your thread any more! Thanks again.

I am also eager to see some momentum on ThinkingRock.

This is simply the best I've seen in regards to implementing the GTD methodology while at the same time providing flexibility to the user. I am also a huge fan of the ability to report what I've finished. I create monthly reports for my manager and archive everything in case I ever require an audit. From the point-of-view of a business user, I am most pleased.

That being said, the speed of development for the primary method of use, the Desktop App, has slowed to a crawl. We've been told calendar support is coming and other nice to haves, but there is a growing backlog of user requested function.

People will move off ThinkingRock if they find something that works better for them, and that is perfectly fine, but I'd hate to see people move off simply because ThinkingRock is coming across as a stalled project that is not actively working to improve itself based on its customer's needs and what makes sense in accordance to the GTD methodology.

I hope whatever is causing the slowdown is resolved quickly and this community starts to see some movement in the months to come. The ThinkingRock development team has a community that is eager to communicate with them and wants to see this application flourish. It would be a shame to let such an opportunity and enthusiasm go to waste.

If no further development is planned for ThinkingRock, I think the community deserves to hear it so we can all start making the necessary arrangements to move our process on to another application.

If development is planned, the community is very eager to hear about it!

One thing that I don't understand is the pricing model. $40 + $10 annually ever after.

I'd pay $40 a year for this app easy. (I'd grumble at $50, but I'd still pay it)

It's a business expense, where the donate button is not.

I don't know how many people would stop using TR if starting January 1st 2012, the renewal rate went up to $40, but I bet that it would be much less than 75%. This means that there would be more money to spend on development.

Just saying
