Good. I did not have any problems while testing so I was surprised (but I did not know about this setting in Dropbox either...). I will update the instructions now.

Do you have to keep the desktop version running to be able to sync using Dropbox?

In that case I wonder why?

I'm using Dropbox to automatically sync the desktop-version between several computers using both Win and Mac. The files are updated in dropbox everytime the application closes.

The iPhone sync should be rewritten to read those files created by the desktop-program automatically. Then you don't have to keep the desktop version running everytime you want to sync. The files are already in the dropbox folder.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my iPhone sync using Dropbox only works when the desktop-version is running.

The file that the iPhone app receives is a different file that the data file the desktop application opens. Reasons are multiple: size, simplification of the code, etc...

Another problem is that the data can have been updated on both platforms so the iPhone updates take precedence. The desktop updates the data based on what it receives from the iPhone then resend all updated actions back. This will include new actions created on the desktop.

Also if your desktop is not open, there is no need to sync the iPhone data. Just work stand alone.

I've been running TR on the same lines for a long time now. For me the big (perhaps only) advantage of the iPhone client syncing using Dropbox would be that it didn't need to have a desktop version active at the same time. To put it another way, I wouldn't need to worry about syncing at all, I can trust that my iPhone and desktop clients would always use the latest version of my TR data pulled from Dropbox.

I'm sure the Dropbox sync done as it is at the moment is going to be very useful for a lot of users, but as both my Win and Mac desktops are both usually running on wifi I'll stick to that until the functionality's updated. In fact I wouldn't be able to run a Dropbox based sync without wifi!

Unless there's a big piece of this that I'm missing?

You have to keep in mind that the iphone client was was designed from the start as an "on the road" companion to the desktop.

It was never intended to be a replacement for the desktop.
