I installed TR 2 a few days onto a USB drive. It worked and teh program is V-E-R-Y impressive.

However, I'd like to go back to TR123 (support such as manual, tutorials and so forth). And then move to TR2 once it is finalised.

I have Java at usb drive in E:\99System\jre1.6.0_06
Ihave TR123 at usb drive in E:\99System\ThinkingRock123

However, after playing around with batch files using this thread as a guide, I'm getting nowhere. I'm assuming that Java is not functioning as I get a brief flash of a cmd shell before it closes. I get the same result on two PC's.

My current script is:
SET JAVA_HOME=\99System\jre1.6.0_06\
SET PATH=%PATH%;%JAVA_HOME%\bin
java -jar 99System\ThinkingRock123\thinking-rock-win32-1.2.3.jar

I've also tried specifying the drive letter currently assigned to the usb drive with no change in result.

I am pretty well ignorant of Java and only have very long-ago experience with batchfiles.

Can anyone direct me? Pleeeezz?

I have never tried using a USB for TR, so this is a guess. You are running "java -jar 99System..." Unless you are running the batch file from the root folder should it not be "java -jar \99System..."?

That got something going. I get some action in the shell, but with errors that meant not much to me. It managed to initialise and then gets into trouble, apparently looking in the directory from which I execute the batch file for stuff that is in the TR directory.

So I've moved the context to the correct directory by adding
"cd \99System\ThinkingRock123"
at the begining of the batch file and things have loaded. I've yet to do any work in it but it's looking good.

So thanks for the response JavaBob - Brief it was but it looks like that was all that was holding me back. I'll put a good word in for you to St Peter at the gate one day.

I have released today a portable version of ThinkingRock 2.0.1.
Please, download it from this link:

It works with Java "portable". You have just to copy the "bin" and "lib" java folders (from C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.XXX) into X-ThinkingRock_2.0.1_rev3\Lib\Java folder and start X-ThinkingRock.exe
All settings and registry entries will be stored in the \User\ThinkingRock directory.

it seems to be working

But i have an error from TR :
when i switch from my desktop to my laptop, the usb drive letter change from D: to I: and i get this error "The data file could not be read. Do you want to try to restore from the latest recovery file?".
I understand why.

But is there something that i can do to solve this issue?

OK, there is a problem with recent files..
I have fixed it (I hope ).

1 - Close X-ThinkingRock;
2 - add the attached code to the X-ThinkingRock.ini file that you can find into X-ThinkingRock_2.0.1_rev3 folder;

(line 37) under:


you have to copy (at line 39) :


3 - save ALWAYS your documents in the X-ThinkingRock_2.0.1_rev3\User folder (or relative subfolders) and NOT in your hd (i.e. desktop or pc My Documents folder);
4 - start X-ThinkingRock.exe. Recent files now are saved and appear in TR menu even if you change the X-ThinkingRock path or drive letter.

Another pb appeared but i don't know if it's related to the portable version or not :
The first time i go to the Actions screen after starting TR, the bottom panel doesn't appear.
I have to switch to another screen (Projects) and come back to solve it.
I'm talking about this panel (Projects, Single Actions Action).

Should i move this to another part of the forum?
Is it related to the portable version only?

Sorry, but about it I can't help you, I'm not an expert TR user.
Did you try if the normal (not portable) version has the same problem?

I'm no expert on batch programming, even less so on Java. But I have managed to modfiy the earlier batch file which doesn't work with later versions because of some small changes to executable file names, directory sturctures. If anyone has any comments to add to the script or can take out unneccesary lines, please go ahead.

The followng works with my thumb drive installation. My TR is under the folder /99System. I have chosen to leave echo on - it comes in handy if anything goes wrong. And it's fun to see what happens when generating reports and so forth.

Naturally I acknowledge those brighter sparks who developed the earlier batch file.

My bottom panel disappears when I double click the tabs at the top of the Actions screen, and comes back when I double click the tab again. Try that. It might not be a bug . . . it might be a feature

The USB version works on all my home computers, but my work computer gives me this error:

Hi I followed all he instructions for setting up TRv2.0.1 on my U3 USB drive and it works fine on two computers, then when I came to run it on a new computer that did not have Java RunTime yet installed it failed to run from the USB drive, despite following all the instructions and guidance on how to have my batch file and where to have my files. Any ideas what the problem might be? The error message is simply along the lines of "Java not detected on this machine" although it is on USB drive.

Hi there,
I too am having problems opening the datafile when using the USB stick on multiple computers.

1. I've downloaded the X-ThinkingRock file from Danix's helpful posting of 2 June and set it up as described.
2. I checked that the ini-file includes the lines from Danix's posting from 3 June
3. At first, everything seemed to working beautifully: I started a new datafile on my home computer (where the USB stick is at the I-drive) and could later open it on my work computer (where the USB stick is at the F-drive).
4. However, after having changed computers again, it's no longer possible to open the file on either computer: I get the following error message (similar to cray's earlier problem):



Any ideas what might be wrong would be much appreciated!

Looks like the data file no longer contains valid XML data. This could be caused by pulling out the USB key before it has finished writing. Hope that you have made a backup.
