Hello there -

I've decided to try using Thinking Rock after trying out a million different softwares (really about 10).

For me, TR has the best GTD formatting I've seen without limiting personal preferences but I am noticing a few quirks (which aren't going to stop me for the moment!). Some of the quirks are due to me not diligently following the GTD method and some are perhaps programming quirks.

So....

1) If I haven't used TR for awhile it take a relatively long time to be accessible again when I activate the window. I have read about this on the forums and have adjusted some things, but it's a little frustrating to try to use the program (jot down a task you just though of) and have to wait 30sec for the program to be usable. Not really sure what to do further about this.

2) I would like to be able to drag and drop projects from the regular projects tab to the future projects tab. I read on the Roadmap page that there will be some changes to the way projects are dealt with - looking forward to reading more.

3) Multiple selections. When I select say 2 options for @context in the Actions Review pane - I see all actions with those two contexts (plural?). But when I go to maybe change the multiple contexts the multiple window will not appear. I have to select a single context and the go back to the drop down and re-select multiple to get my multiple selection window. This happens on anything that allows for multiple selections.

4) blank vs. None - I've only noted this in then energy level category. If I don't assign an energy level it ends up being a null value (maybe?) or blank. I sort of expected that anything that didn't get an energy value assigned to it would appear under the "None" category, but they just don't appear in the filtered list at all (at least when you are using the filter of energy). Is there some way to group assign an energy level? Or some other way to deal with this type of thing?

Thanks for all of your hard work!!

1.) The delay is probably done by your Operating System. If Windows for example sees a program that is not in use, it will quietly swop it out to disk to save memory. You should find the same thing happening with other programs e.g. if you open a wrodprocessor but spend time working on spreadsheets then the wordprocessor will be slow to re-use. It is possible to change Windows default behaviour but not always beneficial. Google will probably give more detailed advice under "virtual memory." If you prevent your system from using virtual memory and load many programs you will get out of memory errors.

2.) I am testing and using ThinkingRock RC2. I can copy a project in the actions screen tab to the future screen tab. So I think this issue has been fixed. However RC2 is still not stable.

I agree with (3.) and (4.)

JavaBob -

Thanks for the comments -

The virtual memory thing is a little more pronounced with Thinking Rock than with any other software I am running. But I'm not going to worry about it - at the moment. I will check out the virtual memory thing too. I did already edit the java start up wrt to memory (added the two xms/xmx parts to the *.jar filetype - "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\javaw.exe" -Xms128m -Xmx256m -jar "%1" %*).

I can copy and paste a project from the active to the future screen - but cannot drag and drop (ok - so I'm lazy :) ).

Some of the project stuff is just my interpretation of GDT or how I envision seeing projects. I don't like seeing future projects in two places: the "future" thoughts section - where I cannot begin developing ideas or steps and the "future projects" project tab - where I can begin developing ideas, but cannot really monitor them.

Anyway - just being wordy again - thanks for the feedback.
