I can't find anything wrong with it.
I used a VMware VM of Ubuntu 7.10. It came with Java 1.6.0_03 from Sun.

Are there any exception messages in the log?

Maybe try using a Sun Java implementation.

I don't see error messages in the log files, I'll try my trx file tomorrow at win-xp & rc2

maybe it has something to do with the size of the my data file / number of actions and tasks, after removing 3/4 of the data file the problem doesn't appear anymore, while deleting some of the big projects a java out of memory error occured several times

I've installed the Win-XP version and tried my datafile, the same problem occurs here as well,
maybe the data file has to reach a certain size to see this effect, my is 3.8meg and contains 4300 tasks

If you select
View > Toolbrs > Memory
it will show you Java's current and maximum memory. Do these figures look close to one another?

yes, the memory numbers are pretty close to each other, the right number is typically at 60-80meg,
maybe increasing available memory would help ? but I couldn't find yet where this parameter can be modified

in the tr.conf file you can set:

-Xmsn - the initial memory size
-Xmxn - the maximum memory size
-J-XX:PermSize - not quite sure, probably should be 64m
-J-XX:MaxPermSize - not quite sure, probably should be 256m

eg.

default_options="-J-Xms64m -J-Xmx512m -J-XX:PermSize=64m -J-XX:MaxPermSize=256m ... "

I think that you are not experiencing a shortage of memory.

My memory is configured at C:\Program Files\TR-2.0.0.rc.2\tr-2.0.0.rc.2\etc\tr.conf with the switch -J-Xmx256m. This means that Thinking Rock will take up to 256mb but my current readings are 20.5/63.6 which shows that I am using a maximum of 63.6mb so still have room for expansion. Similarly you are quoting 80mb.

If you have a gigabyte of memory you could double the sizes to
-J-Xms128m -J-Xmx512m -J-XX:PermSize=128m -J-XX:MaxPermSize=512m
For some reason the sizes are always multiples of two. The downside of making this number larger is that if you have several large programs your system will slow down considerably. This is because Windows will need to continually swap programs in and out of memory. However it might be worth trying temporarily to see if it fixes the problem. I am rather pessimistic about this though.

I am assuming (given that you are using several operating systems) that you know how to change configuration files and would not consider using a word processor, for example :!:

May I check that you are using the second RC2 for Windows?

[Sorry Jeremy, we both replied at the same time]

I've doubled all memory stettings:
tr_default_options="-J-Xms128m -J-Xmx512m -J-XX:PermSize=128m -J-XX:MaxPermSize=512m -J-ea -J-Dnetbeans.logger.console=true"

with these options the first 2-3 context changes were accepted quite quickly and then was again a long delay of several minutes during which TR didn't react to inputs,
the performance monitor showed high CPU load all the time
on a second try I doubled the settings again, but now this freezing effect happened right after the first change

the following setting didn't improve it either:
default_options="-J-Xms64m -J-Xmx512m -J-XX:PermSize=64m -J-XX:MaxPermSize=256m -J-ea -J-Dnetbeans.logger.console=true"

I tried this on Ubuntu 7.10-32bit / Java 1.6.0_03_b05 / AMDx64-3800 + 4(3.3)gb
the Win-XP PC I don't have available right now

forgot to mention: my data file is located on a USB-Stick (don't think that it makes a difference),
and yes, I'm using RC2

RC2 was issued, withdrawn and re-issued. If this is news to you then take another look at the announcements sticky. The withdrawal related to TR freezing.

I've just downloaded RC2 again, the behavior is the same,
it sems to keep the PC very busy,
in the perf-meter the load of one of the cores (alternating) is close to 100%,
memory usage constantly at 330meg,
the system is accessing data.trx and data.bak.trx from time to time (not modifying)
