I would like to be able to save my ThinkingRock data file to my iDisk so I can easily and automatically share the data file between two computers.

For some reason, my iDisk doesn't appear as an option when I try to save my TR data file.

Anybody else trying this on a MAC?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott Cardais

I think it should be under Volumes.

Choose your computer name in the first drop-down list, then choose Volumes form the bottom of the list of files and directories.

jeremy: can you please confirm that data will not be corrupted if idisk is set to auto-sync? this was an awful problem with kinkless gtd omnioutliner files. the package container would remain, but the xml inside would get corrupted.

No, I have not done this.

Maybe someone else can answer this?

Could you try it out and let us know (make a backup of your data file first of course).

Hi Jeremy,

I saved the file on my iDisk with automatic syncing on.

So far, so good. I am now sharing the file between two copies of TR, one running on MacBook Pro and one running on Quad G5.

I have not tested it with multiple copies of TR running simultaneously. My method involves closing the app on either one before opening the document on the other one.

This is great news though. I would consider adding it to the FAQ for OS X users who wish to sync their data across multiple computers:

Q: Can I sync my data across multiple computers?
A: Yes. Save your working document to a shared network drive, such as OS X's .Mac iDisk or an AFP (afp://) or SAMBA (smb://) mounted shared drive.

I would also then put in a feature request for the application to recognize whether the document has been modified by an external process. Applications like BBEdit do this. For example, if you leave TR running on your work computer with your iDisk-saved data file, but head home for the weekend without shutting it off, then when you return to work TR should have launched an alert dialogue stating "This document has been modified since you last edited it. Do you wish to load the new data? <no> <yes>"

Thanks!
Justin

That's good.

You will probably have problems if you have two instances of TR accessing the same data file at the same time or one that is being synchronized at the same time, as one instance will save and overwrite the changes made in the other instance.

The way I use TR is to save a .trx on a USB disk that I carry with me all the time. TR is installed on all the computers I'm using.
This is working quite well, but I do have one feature request though... it would be nice if one could also share the setup information between the installations.
I normally put quite a bit of work into setting up the action screen and its a bit of a hassle to do that for each individual installation.

Can I take this one step further? Can I store my data file on a web server and access that file from *any* computer?

This is my problem with most other GTD systems I've been trying (and I'm about worn out after signing up for and trying about 6 of them). I need to access my system from:
Internet tablet (N810)
Cell phone (Nokia 6300, with internet access)
Home computer (Mac)
Work computer (PC)

If I can use FTP, SFTP or even HTTP to access a common data file, I think I'd be in business. Of course it would be great if I could work off-line and then sync the files later as well.

Any comments on whether this will work with TR? (I'm still a "prospective" user)

Thanks!

tmagnussen, that is in version 2.0

jswayze, FolderShare will do the job except for the cell phone part. It will synchronize the data file between all the computers.

PurpleFlux,

FolderShare looks pretty nice, but I didn't see a way to use it with my Nokia N810 tablet... is there a third party solution for this?
