We have released new modules today (20 June 2009) to try to address the performance problem. If you go under Miscellaneous, Data Tab, you can specify at which interval you want the automatic save and recovery file to occur. It was set previously to 30 seconds. When you set it, don't forget that it means that if there is a crash and TR needs to restart from your recovery file, you will have lost the interval time of data.

The default is now 5 minutes and I have set mine up to 10 minutes.

Hi Clare

I have also been seeing this problem of slow UI responsiveness.

I have installed the new member modules which you have created, and have changed the data refresh rate to every hour.

If anything, since I updated to these modules the issue has got worse.

Although a restart of the application resolves the problem, this is only temporary and the unresposiveness is back in less than a couple of minutes now.

This is becoming a real frustration of Thinking Rock, which other than this issue is a most excellent application.

Regards

Ben

Perhaps, this has this been fixed.
I installed the most recent Data updates, and things are very fast.

Now I can multi-select actions, and change status, and TR is lightning fast.

Hi

I have also intalled the latest Data updates, but am still seeing this issue. I have also update to the latest version of Java. I have tried using the product locally as opposed to on a memory stick. All to no avail.

This has got to the point now where the product is becoming unusable. Within 2 or 3 minutes of my using the Interface after startup or a restart (of the app) the UI is going very slow - updating actions, dates & contexts etc can take 10 seconds (seriously).

Until last week I was a paying member. I will not be renewing my membership unless this issue is resolved. As far as I am concerned the cost of being a paying member has been a waste of money. Nothing has been done in the last 6 months to resolve these issues which a lot of people have observed. Even the modules which were released specifically for members were released a few months later as part of TR 2.2.1.

Please, please, please - Sort this issue out. Can the developers even confirm that you are able to see this problem?

Ben

I have more problems at work (behind a proxy and probably less memory) but I have not experience real slowness recently. Is your file particularly large? Do you have many recurrent actions? Do you synchronise your iCal data? Could you try on a different computer with more memory (just to know if it improves, I am not suggesting that it should be the solution). Could you send us your log file so we can see if TR is getting stuck anywhere in particular? Go to View, IDE Log.

Jeremy did have a look at this problem but did not find anything. He wants to change the way the data is stored and handled. It will then be easier for him to improve performance. We are aware that it is a problem for users.

I'm glad to see this thread, because I thought my laptop had developed a serious problem!

I updated today to version 2.2.1 having not used TR for a few weeks. I don't recall ever having this issue before but now the program has become pretty much unusable due to its freezing up. I marked a few tasks as complete, then went to edit one more and TR just froze and my CPU usage went to maximum. I had to force a closedown through Task Manager after waiting for 5 minutes for TR to respond. The edits did respond after a couple of minutes but TR itself remained completely unresponsive.

When I restarted TR my edits had been lost, so I made them again and got exactly the same outcome, i.e. a total freeze when editing an action description.

Product Version: ThinkingRock 2.2.1
Java: 1.6.0_13; Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM 11.3-b02
System: Windows Vista version 6.0 running on x86; Cp1252; en_GB (tr)
Userdir: C:\Users\Isobel\AppData\Roaming\.thinkingrock\tr-2.2.1

I have a dual core system, 4GB of ram in total. I only have 232 "All Actions" so I wouldn't have thought that was a large file. I wish I'd never updated! Is there any way to revert to the previous version?

Thanks
Isobel

Could you send us any log file?

You can re-install 2.0.1. You need to use a previous backup of your file or change the version number of your existing one.

Hi Claire

I do have a fairly large TR file (it is just under 4MB). I have tried TR on various computers, one of which has 4 GB of memory and I still see the same issues. One thing to note is that in general I run TR off a memory stick, but I have tried running it locally and the problem of slow responsiveness still exists.

I have sent you a PM containing my TR log file.

Hope this helps in your investigations, let me know if there is anything else I can provide you with to assist,

Macclad

Tonight I just noticed a difference of speed if I have Excel open or not at the same as TR. Can you try?

A member only module has now been delivered to solve this problem. Now each Review Actions Tab (and number of actions in the Tab name) is only refreshed when user clicks on the Tab.
