Hello:

I recently installed the application and have found it reasonably solid. However, when the laptop is not connected to the network, the applciation slows down considerably. In particular, keyboard input is noticably delayed.

This seems like suspicious behavior, similar to what would be expected from a keylogger.

I've uninstalled the application pending my investigation. I'd like to use the application, but need further information.

Anything you can provide is appreciated.

Thanks.

Don't worry. Nothing suspicious.

Just trying to connect to the internet as ThinkingRock checks if there is a new version. Please refer to the following FAQ:
http://www.thinkingrock.com.au/faq.php#faq5b

In the next version, the check will be set to be done every 2 weeks until the user changes the user preferences.

Hi Claire:

Thanks for the feedback. I had a look at the FAQ before posting, and changed the update to every 2 weeks. Unfortunately this did not resolve the issue.

I will wait for the next version to see if the situation improves. Its too bad, I really liked the app.

TR only (tries to) accesses your internet connection for checking the version file on www.thinkingrock.com.au.

There must be some other reason for the slow-down - like having lots of other apps running or some other app trying to access the internet or something. Have a look and see what other apps are running.

I have noticed slowdowns too (the kind where you do something else and wait for the window to get around to updating itself). At that point I ran top and java was taking up 95% of my processor. I blamed the garbage collector (I typically run ThinkingRock for days on end, so far, and I don't use any onther java apps on this machine). If it happens again I'll check netstat and let you know whether it's doing anything with the network.

You might try using similar tools to examine your installation's behavior.
If a UDP or TCP connection shows up in netstat you can further examine it with wireshark (formerly known as ethereal). You might find something suspicious has been installed that has nothing to do with ThinkingRock.

I discovered that on my windows 2000 machine Java itself checks for updates, as I disabled it TR and it still was slow when loading with no internet connetion. You'll need to switch it off in Java preferences in control panel.
