Just to let you know that we will try to include the following functionality into v1.2.2:

1. Add a user preferences tick box: automatic sequencing within projects - Default unticked.
2. When user sets an action to done, if action belongs to a sub-project or project, if test for no more active actions within that project TRUE (sets project icon to red at the moment) and user pref point 1 ticked, find next inactive action in the list for that project. If found, set that action status to Do ASAP. If none found or user pref point 1 unticked, same as now (icon red).
Please note that if user reset the initial action to undone, the previously inactive action stays as Do ASAP.

Let me know if I forgot something.

Claire,

One tweak you might want to consider for this, is when it does the test and there is neither an action item nor an inactive item in that project tree, then let the user have the option to enter a new next action right then an there rather then just turning the project red. Since many actions have immediate and obvious follow up's, this saves a step later on.

Cheers,
Greg

As a follow up to this, there's something else that might be considered:

Another check box called "Create Another One Upon Completion" would cause an exact copy of that task to be generated whenever it is marked as Done.

This would create a rudimentary "recurring action" capability... granted, in the case of scheduled or delegated actions, it would not update the schedule information, but that could be added in a subsequent release (basically, you would need to add a recurrence schedule... e.g., add a day for daily, add a month for monthly, add a year for yearly, or, if you get even fancier, add a day of the month or week).

I see the checkbox in the Preferences, but are you aware that it has no effect? Even with this checkbox checked, if a project has an ASAP action and an inactive action and you mark the ASAP action Done, the inactive action does not magically "come to life" - it remains inactive, as in the previous version.

You can set it (or not) for each project. There is a "Sequence Actions" tickbox on the project screen.

I just want to add that automatic sequencing will not be done for existing projects (created prior to v1.2.2) unless you tick the box at project level manually.

Once it is set up at the preference level, any new project will use that preference by default.

Aha, thanks - now I see the feature. However, it isn't very smart about sub-projects, is it? So, in this layout:

Project A
action 1
action 2 - inactive
Project B
action 1 - inactive
action 2 - inactive
action 3 - inactive

When action A-1 is Done, action A-2 springs to life - good. But when action A-2 is Done, action B-1 is ignored - it is action A-3 that springs to life.
