I have had the same data corruption error occur two times in a row. I previously manually updated an older bak file to resolve it, but now that updated saved file is giving the same error. I believe it is the same error a gentleman in the Epsilon furum reported.

Here is the error from the dialog box:

The datafile could not be read due to the following error:

: only whitespace content allowed before start tage and not \u1a (position: START_DOCUMENT seen \u1a… @1:1)

Do you want to try and restore from the latest recovery file?

OK CANCEL

Here is my system info:

Product Version: ThinkingRock 2.0.1
Java: 1.6.0_05; Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM 10.0-b19
System: Windows XP version 5.1 running on x86; Cp1252; en_US (tr)
Userdir: C:\Documents and Settings\Pete\Application Data\.thinkingrock\tr-2.0.1

I run off a USB thumbdrive and store my data there, however, the same error occurs when I try running the version on my local HD or retriving copies of my data file I stored on my HD.

BTW - I will send my file in via E-Mail as this is what you asked of the other gentleman....Thanks!

I am hoping to retreive my data file, and prevent the error from occuring again. :)

This problem continues to occur - even with multiple back-ups, etc. I am thinking it may be related to saving the data file from the application running on the local hard drive and then trying to open it later in the version run from my USB stick.

I can now make this happen by running TR off my USB and saving the data file to the USB. I then close TR, and unplug the USB and plug it back in. When I restart TR and try to open the data file I saved or its back-up I get the error above.

Conversely, if I save the data file to the local hard drive and copy it to the USB, I can then open it off the USB

Summary - With my configuration above, when saving a data file to a USB from a USB launched instance of TR, and then unplugging and plugging in the USB and trying to retreive that file, it gives the corrouption error. When I save teh file to a local HD it opens fine there. When I save the file to the USB and close TR, but don't disconnect the USB and restart TR and pull the USB data file it works. Something happens to the data file when I pull the USB stick from the port.

Untested/unanswered:
- Does it still corrupt from a TR version launched from a local HD?
- Why did this work for a while and then stop?

I'm having the same problem. TR worked fine installed locally, but as soon as I access the .TRX from a USB drive it falls over.

Did anyone ever resolve this?

I believe that \u1a refers to Unicode whereby 1a represents a star or asterisk. This means that your datafile begin with a star. Since the file should be XML this should never happen.

My file begins as follows:
Quote:
<data><version>3</version><maxID>7232</maxID><topics><items><topic><name>None</name><description>No topic.</description><color><red>0</red><green>0</green><blue>0</blue><alpha>255</alpha>

You can see there are a lot of items wrapped in greater-than and less-than symbols. This is normal for an xml file. The file should not start with a star.

You can view your file in notepad. Do not use Word or any other product capable of inserting colours or complex formatting. DO NOT SAVE the file. If I am right your file is corrupt. Take a look and see if you think there is any useable data in the file. If so, you MAY find that Jeremy can salvage it for you.

This continued to happen to me even after switching USB drives. I think you can't save your data to the USB drive when running TR from the USB Drive. I worked around this by always saving to my local HD and E-Mailing the file to myself, so I can retreive it virually anywhere. I would rather work from and save to my usb drive, but that does not seem to be an option for me.

I cannot see why your USB drive would be different from your HDD. I wonder if there is a configuration issue? When TR opens a data file it would record the location of the data file so that should be OK but perhaps it is somehow confusing the two drives.

1.) Do you two versions of TR installed i.e. one on USB and one on HDD? Java finds its program files using a "class-path" so if your HDD location is mentioned on the class-path before the USB version it is possible that Jave is starting on the USB then swopping to the program files on your HDD.

2.) Are there any errors on the log file. Unfortunately these are per session so I think you would have to corrupt a file and look at the log before closing down.

3.) If you are using Windows try right clicking the icon or menu item and look at properties. Is the target or the start folder referring to your HDD?

To share the data between computers, have you tried Dropbox? Other options in this FAQ: http://trgtd.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=36:synchdata&catid=35:thinkingrock-portable&Itemid=41
